The sacroiliac joint fusion market is on a rapid growth trajectory, with its global size reaching more than USD 700 million in 2023. Projections indicate a robust compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.8% from 2024 to 2030.
What’s driving this growth?
A confluence of factors including the increasing prevalence of lower back, buttocks, groin, and lower extremities pain, propelled by technological advancements and a rising incidence of sacroiliitis or sacroiliac joint dysfunction.Behind this growth are innovations in minimally invasive surgical techniques, which are revolutionizing the treatment landscape for sacroiliac joint conditions. Moreover, improved insurance coverage, coupled with proactive efforts by major companies in the healthcare sector, are further catalyzing market expansion.Notably, the integration of minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion procedures into Medicaid programs across 44 U.S. states as of 2018, as reported by AmeriHealth Caritas, underscores the growing acceptance and accessibility of these advanced treatments. Additionally, by 2019, 32 Blue Cross Blue Shield plans had embraced coverage for this procedure, signaling a significant endorsement of minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion within the insurance landscape.
Which are the causes?
Sacroiliac joint fusion is a surgical procedure aimed at stabilizing the pelvis (iliac bone) to the spine (sacrum) by fusing them together. It is indicated for various conditions such as trauma, infection, cancer, and spinal instability. This procedure can be performed either as a minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedure or as an open surgical procedure, with the latter requiring a larger incision and longer recovery time. Minimally invasive approaches like percutaneous SI joint (SIJ) fusion involve the insertion of cages or screws, sometimes with bone grafts, to achieve fusion. SI joint dysfunction can arise from various factors, including previous spine surgery, pregnancy, trauma, and obesity. Studies indicate that up to 75% of individuals undergoing lumbar fusion surgery may experience degeneration of the sacroiliac (SI) joint within five years post-operation. Pregnancy poses another risk factor, as the hormone relaxin released during pregnancy can result in hypermobility of the SI joint. Trauma, such as accidents or injuries, can disrupt the SI joint, leading to chronic pain. Additionally, obesity can exacerbate SI joint dysfunction by imposing excessive load on the joint, ultimately contributing to its dysfunction and associated symptoms.
