IMPALA®

September 10, 2014 By SPINEMarketGroup

Minor intervention. Major impact

As an alternative to fusion, minimally invasive surgery is becoming increasingly important thanks to the considerable protection of tissue it offers. With IMPALA® we offer an implant that pays close attention to the preservation of the surrounding anatomical structures compared to traditional surgical procedures. The three-part IMPALA® implant is inserted using mini incisions between the spinous processes of two vertebral bodies and acts as a spacer for decompression and permanent expansion of the intervertebral foramen as well as for stabilising the spine. A quick and gentle procedure to treat stenosis of the spinal canal.

IMPALA® is inserted using a gentle minimally invasive posterior midline approach in the spinal region L1 – S1.

The implant consists of two wings that are connected via a hinge and are fixed in the final position using a closure component. IMPALA® is held in position by its shape and the anatomical structures such as ligaments and bony processes, meaning that no additional fixation is required.

The clear and intuitive instrument set enables secure insertion of the IMPALA® implants in just a few surgical steps with a short surgery time.

Along with implantation that is gentle to tissues, the intraoperative risk is also reduced: unlike traditional open surgery, it is not necessary to open  the spinal canal and directly expose the nerves so that the associated risk of nerve injury and scarring are minimised. The use of IMPALA® also has various positive aspects:

  • Tensioning of the interspinous ligaments
  • Separating the posterior elements with accompanying unloading of the facet joints
  • Reduction in facetal pain
  • Widening of the intervertebral foramen and thus decompression of the spinal canal
  • Relieving of the load on the disc, reduction in disc pain and reduction in the risk of prolapse

IMPALA® implants are available in various sizes to adapt to different anatomical situations and to ensure a high degree of intraoperative flexibility.

Material details

PEEK-OPTIMA® is a biocompatible polymer offering a number of benefits in this indication. In its strength it is comparable to cortical bone anddue to its excellent MRI compatibility permits artefact-free follow-upexaminations.

Special IMPALA® features:

Minimally invasive surgical procedure with short surgery time

  • Little stress or risk to the patient
  • Particularly gentle for older patients and those with multiple morbidities

Minor damage to natural structures

  • Greatest protection of tissues: supraspinal ligament and bony structures are preserved
  • Almost no blood loss

Safe procedure and simple and clear instrument set for increased handling safety

  • Opening of the spinal canal and direct exposure of the nerves is not necessary
  • Reversible

Monosegment and bisegment implantation possible from L1 to S1

Stabilisation and preservation of mobility

  • Preservation of physiological kinematics in the connecting segment
  • Preservation of sagittal balance and lordosis

Tantalum markers

  • Easy and reliable identification and positioning of the implant
