(UPDATED 2023): +100 Percutaneous Screw MIS Systems to Know!

February 5, 2023 By SPINEMarketGroup

In 2002, Medtronic launched SEXTANT, the first percutaneous system on the market: The insertion of screws without opening the skin, was almost Science fiction!

For many years, SEXTANT was the only MIS percutaneous system on the market providing numerous advantages compared to open surgery such as less blood loss from surgery, faster recovery from surgery or reduced risk of muscle damage or infections.

But for more than 10 years the market grew slowly, mainly because of the following four circumstances:

  • Learning Curve: Minimally invasive spinal techniques as the percutaneous screw insertion, had steep learning curve and required different skills. Percutaneous pedicle screw insertion has been an intimidating prospect for surgeons who had only been trained in open techniques. Companies have devoted many resources in recent years to train surgeons in these techniques.
  • Percutaneous Devices: Sextant, was a very innovative system but since it was the first of its class, it was complex and difficult to use.Over the past decade, the techniques for minimally invasive spinal stabilization and fusion have improved significantly. A key ingredient of percutaneous pedicle screw techniques is the access from the skin level to the pedicle screw tulip. In general, designs have moved towards simplification of design and ease of surgeon handling, with additional instrumentation to provide the power to achieve deformity reduction
  • Radiation: Many surgeons have avoided the use of percutaneous systems due to excessive radiation. Today, with the advance of technology such as robotics, navegation or intraoperative CT, Radiation has been greatly reduced.
  • Indications:With increasing experience, indications for minimally invasive spinal fusion have expanded including the treatment of spine fractures.

Why?

  1. The market is growing: According to the consulting firm GlobalData, the minimally invasive spine (MIS) surgery market, will rise to just over $842 million, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.4 percent.
  2. Technology: Easier, Faster, Safer and with less Radiation:Percutaneous screw insertions has been tipically performed free hand and with the use of fluoroscopy, exposing the surgeon and patient to ionizing radiation. Today, technology (Robots, Intraoperative CT, Navigation) are making these MIS surgeries Safer, Easier (reducing Learning curve and thus opened to more surgeons) and with less Radiation.
  3. Expanded Indications: Today, the current indications are similar to those for open surgery. Indications for percutaneous pedicle screw fixation include mainly degenerative spine disorders, trauma, infections, Obese Patients and even deformity.
  4. Benefits for the Patient: The MIS procedures provide many advantages to the patient as: Less blood loss from surgery, faster recovery from surgery, Reduced risk of muscle damage, Less risks of infections and Cosmetics benefits.

More than 100 Percutaneous Screw devices in the market :

Today, 15 years later after the launch of Sextant, we count more than 110 MIS percutaneous systems in the market.Although the market is dominated by Medtronic (Sextant), DePuy-Synthes (Viper), Nuvasive (Precept), Globus Medical (Creo MIS, Revolve), Alphatec (Illico), there are more than 90 additional percutaneous devices. Please to know more about them, visit the MIS section:https://thespinemarketgroup.com/category/mis/
