On December 5th, Charité Berlin in Germany performed the first spinal fusion procedure in Europe using the CD Horizon™ ModuLeX™ system for deformity correction. The surgery was successfully carried out by Professor Matthias Pumberger, marking an important step in the clinical adoption of this innovative technology outside North America.
The introduction of CD Horizon™ ModuLeX™ at Charité Berlin not only represents the first deformity surgery using this system in Europe, but also opens new opportunities for personalized treatment of complex spinal deformities, greater precision and visualization—particularly in cases such as scoliosis, kyphosis, and severe spinal curvatures—and potential improvements in surgical outcomes for patients with challenging spinal pathologies.
What is the CD Horizon™ ModuLeX™ System?
CD Horizon™ ModuLeX™ is a modular spinal fixation system developed by Medtronic, specifically designed for complex spinal deformity procedures. It is part of the CD Horizon™ portfolio, a family with more than 40 years of experience in pedicle screw and spinal fixation technologies.
Benefits
- Intraoperative modular design
The system allows surgeons to select and assemble screw components—such as shanks and heads—directly in the operating room based on patient anatomy, enabling real-time customization and improved procedural flexibility. - Enhanced anatomical visibility
By assembling screws in situ, the system provides improved visualization of the surgical field, facilitating precise maneuvers during complex deformity corrections. - Strong and secure connection
All components are engineered and rigorously tested to ensure a robust, unidirectional locking mechanism between screw elements, contributing to overall construct stability. - Compatibility with advanced surgical technologies
The system integrates seamlessly with surgical navigation and robotic platforms, including Medtronic’s AiBLE™ ecosystem, which combines navigation, robotic guidance, imaging, and AI-assisted data to support a more predictable surgical workflow.
