April 14, 2018 By SPINEMarketGroup

The CD Horizon® Legacy™ Spinal System can be used to treat scoliosis, a condition in which the spine develops one or more abnormal, side-to-side curves that in turn may affect the body’s overall balance and alignment, as well as possibly lead to other physical and health problems. The CD Horizon Legacy Spinal System is one of the most popular systems for the surgical treatment of scoliosis. The CD Horizon Legacy Spinal System has been used to treat scoliosis since 2004. To-date there have been over 500,000 surgeries performed with the CD Horizon Legacy Spinal System. The Legacy System is a complete and comprehensive system of a variety of implantable devices, including rods, hooks, screws, and other instrumentation. The benefit of the Legacy System is that all components are designed to work with each other so that a spine surgeon can precisely select the implants needed and be confident they will work together. With the Legacy System, a surgeon can develop implants that can safely and effectively treat many different spine conditions in patients of any age and all sizes.

The variety of tools in the Legacy System allows for a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) correction of the spinal deformity.Surgical correction of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis involves implanting screws into the spine that serve as anchors for strong but malleable rods. The rods can immobilize portions of the deformed spine and can be bent to re-shape the spine to a more normal curve. These implants also promote correct alignment of the spine so that fusion (joining two or more vertebrae) can take place when needed. Special cages (hollow devices with perforated walls) can be inserted between vertebrae, along with bone growth substances to promote the fusion. Such techniques available using the Legacy System can also be used to treat many other spinal conditions, including kyphosis, spondylolisthesis, spinal fractures, and flatback syndrome.

About Spinal Deformity

Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine that can occur in any age group. Scoliosis is a coronal plane (i.e. side to side) deformity occurring in children, adolescents, and adults. Symptoms vary with age of onset and severity of the curvature; cosmetic problems including sitting imbalance, breathing difficulty or delayed development is common findings in infants and young children. A rib hump, pelvic or shoulder height imbalance tend to common in the adolescent group. Intractable back pain, sciatica, leg weakness or numbness and gait difficulty are common reasons for surgical correction in adults.

Kyphosis is seen when a person’s spinal balance has moved too far forward to allow the spine to effectively carry the body weight without progressive deformity, pain or neurologic loss of function. Patients typically walk in a forward flexed posture being unable to stand up straight. This condition can also occur along with scoliosis causing Kyphoscoliosis.
