Is peek dead for spinal implants? Not everyone thinks the same!

August 9, 2022 By SPINEMarketGroup

This morning I came across an article written by a manufacturer* of spinal implants defending PEEK as a material with many advantages. It is the first time I noticed a company defending it these days, even though for 20 years it has been the gold standard. It would be for something, right?

The reason is that PEEK had many advantages at that time and represented a clear advance over other materials. However, the development of the markets occurs with improved products with new designs, materials, and approaches. This is how techniques such as XLIF or trends such as expandable or porous titanium cages came out. It is R&D that makes markets advance by making (let me put it that way) things fashionable.

Although PEEK is no longer a trend, I want to defend it since it has many advantages in many cases and for many implants:

It is non-toxic and temperature, corrosion, and abrasion resistant. Compared to other materials, it is much stronger and has better bio-mechanical properties. As a result, it can retain its physical integrity and strength very well. Finally, it is transparent on X-ray, MRI, and CT imaging.

Without detracting from the new materials and implants, I think PEEK still has a place in the spine market.
Therefore, Long live the PEEK!
What is your opinion?
