(UPDATED 2024): +60 Expandable PLIF/TLIF Cages to Know!

February 17, 2024 By SPINEMarketGroup

In recent years, the market for expandable cages has grown incredibly. We estimate the market at more than $500 million in the United States alone. Expandable lumbar spine cages are innovative devices that play a crucial role in modern spinal surgery, offering a customizable solution for stabilizing the lumbar spine and addressing conditions that affect disc height and vertebral alignment. Expandable lumbar spine cages provide many advantages compared with regular cages:

  • Expandability: The key feature of these cages is their ability to expand during surgery. Surgeons can do it to the desired height, providing a customized fit for each patient.
  • Minimally Invasive Insertion: Surgeons access the spine through a small incision and carefully place the expandable cage between the affected vertebrae. Once in place, the surgeon expands it to the desired height. Compared to traditional open spinal surgeries, the minimally invasive approach with expandable cages generally results in less damage to surrounding tissues and muscles.
  • Customization: The expandable nature of these cages allows surgeons to tailor the treatment to each patient’s specific anatomical needs.

Which are the Competitors?

In the early 2000s, some expandable cages appeared on the spine market. They were not very successful since, along with the advantages of expansion, they also generated problems such as migration, expulsion, dural or neural traction injury, and pseudarthrosis. However, a few years later, with technological improvement, Globus Medical launched successful expandable implants such as the Rise of the Altera (2014).Today, all companies focused on the spine business have already expandable cages or are developing them. In this update from the end of 2023, we have identified and included in this list of expandable PLIF/TLIF cages 60 implants:
