Spinal Elements® Introduces its MIS Ultra™ Platform of Products and Procedures Designed to Minimize the Unintended Consequences of Spine Surgery

June 17, 2020 By SPINEMarketGroup

Carlsbad, CA – June 17, 2020 – Spinal Elements, a Carlsbad, CA-based medical device company focused on spine surgery procedures, today introduced its MIS Ultra™ platform of products and procedures. MIS Ultra is a suite of minimally invasive integrated instrument and implantable device solutions designed to optimize spinal fixation and restoration while minimizing the unintended consequences of spine surgery for patients and reducing procedural complexity for surgeons and surgical teams.

Traditionally, MIS procedures have been focused on the size of the incision required for access to the spine. The MIS Ultra product suite goes beyond small incisions to consider the implications of spine surgery after the procedure has taken place. The surgical instruments of the MIS Ultra platform have been designed to reduce the disruption of the patient’s skeletal and muscle tissue, and the implants have been designed to balance the loads shared between the implants and the body while not disrupting the patient’s surrounding healthy anatomy.

An additional requirement of many other MIS solutions is the increased reliance on intraoperative computed topography (CT) scans or fluoroscopy for imaging purposes.

These imaging sources subject the patient and operating room staff to radiation. MIS Ultra products are designed to require less intraoperative imaging thus reducing the need for radiation-emitting equipment.

The Katana™ Lateral Access System, the most recent MIS Ultra platform release, was introduced at NASS in September 2019 and enables Spinal Elements to provide a complete procedural solution for lateral spine surgery. Katana seeks to minimize the unintended consequence of approach-related post-operative thigh pain, a known consequence of lateral spine surgery, while reducing surgical complexity for the surgeon
and surgical support staff.

The company plans a number of product introductions and launches that will join the MIS Ultra platform. “We are thrilled to introduce the MIS Ultra brand to help demonstrate the compelling power of these innovative and differentiated organically-developed solutions,” stated Jason Blain, President and CEO of Spinal Elements. “We expect that our most recently released products in this arena, including Katana, will drive company growth, as will the next several products and procedures in this series of introductions anticipated throughout 2020 and 2021.”
