Memphis will be hosting a group of experts in spinal surgery this weekend for the first conference of the Society for Advanced Spinal Intervention. The event will be held Nov. 16 at the Medical Education and Research Institute beginning at 7:30 a.m. MERI is located at 44 S. Cleveland.SASI is working to develop a standardized system of credentialing surgeons who can specialize in minimally invasive spinal surgery.Richard Arjun Kaul, a spinal surgeon who is presenting at the event, said as technology has evolved over the last few years, doctors have had a difference of opinion on how to treat patients with neck and back conditions. Those differences include interventional pain treatment, neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery. He said SASI’s goal is to develop a standardized method of training in the area of minimally invasive surgery.
“20 years ago, cardiologists developed techniques of placing catheters for heart patients, and now people see interventional cardiologists instead of cardiac surgeons,” Kaul said. “SASI is positioning itself to become the umbrella organization so doctors can have a credential that carries equal weight around the world.”
SASI plans to host its first training module in February, and will develop different training that will range from three to 12 month increments. The organization is also exploring the possibility of the conference becoming an annual event.
“We chose Memphis as the first site because of its central location and relationship with the spine and musculoskeletal sector,” Kaul said. “We may decide it could be held there annually.”
The conference is free, but seating is limited. Registration can be done via email: admin@sasiglobal.org. It will be held from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 16.
