Carlsbad, California, December 12, 2013 /Marketwired/ – Aurora Spine Corporation announced today that the first U.S. surgical implant of the company’s ZIP ULTRA(TM) Minimally Invasive Interspinous Fusion System was performed at Southern California Hospital in Culver City, CA. The ZIP ULTRA provides surgeons with a greater ability to treat a wide range of spinal pathologies, all while being easy to use. Surgeons have started to schedule surgeries now that the system is available for sale and use in the United States.
The initial U.S. procedure was performed by Dr. Ian Armstrong, a specialist in neurosurgery, microsurgery and spinal instrumentation. Dr. Armstrong is the Medical Director of the Southern California Spine Institute, a premier center for the treatment of spinal disorders.
“The ZIP ULTRA MIS Interspinous Fusion System is elegant and well designed for minimally invasive surgery. It grants greater flexibility during procedures, forcing me to re-evaluate how spine surgery should be performed in the future,” stated Dr. Armstrong. “Safety is a very important factor to me and I was happy to see reduced radiation exposure during the ZIP ULTRA procedure. The strength of the implant allows it to be used in place of pedicle screws when applicable. I strongly believe the ZIP implant is a game changer.”
In late November Aurora launched its FDA 510(k) cleared AURORA DISCOVERY(TM) Interbody system. DISCOVERY is a cervical intervertebral body fusion device consisting of teeth on the inferior and superior surfaces to prevent back out and migration. The implant design is rectangular with a hollow core for bone graft to promote integration and fusion between the endplates. The first surgical implant of the AURORA DISCOVERY Interbody System was performed on November 26, 2013.
“These two surgeries are huge milestones that we believe will establish Aurora as the leader in advanced spinal technologies” stated Trent Northcutt, President and CEO of Aurora Spine. “We are extremely excited about the continuous growth and progress the company is making. Aurora Spine will continue to develop products that are truly minimally invasive technologies.”
