Zimmer® DTO® 5.5 System Provides Surgeons With Versatility to Treat Different Stages of Degeneration at Contiguous Levels

February 26, 2013 By SPINEMarketGroup

MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Zimmer Spine is excited to announce the launch of the Zimmer DTO 5.5 System. Building on the success of the original Zimmer® DTO® System, new implants and instruments have been designed to connect the clinically-proven Dynesys® Dynamic Stabilization System with Zimmer Spine’s world class pedicle screw systems, the Sequoia® Pedicle Screw System and the Instinct™ Java® Spinal Fixation System. The Zimmer DTO 5.5 System enables clinicians to treat varying levels of disc degeneration at adjacent levels, seamlessly integrating fusion and non-fusion treatments through a single construct.
The DTO 5.5 Implant consists of a combined 100mm polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) cord and a 5.5mm titanium rod, which can be contoured to match patient anatomy. The DTO 5.5 Implant is used in conjunction with the innovative Zimmer® Universal Transition Screw to create a strong and low-profile construct for stabilization of the treated segments of the spine.
“Many patients present with differing levels of disc degeneration at adjacent segments of the lumbar spine. This makes it challenging for clinicians to effectively treat the entire pathology without the flexibility of combining fusion and non-fusion approaches,” said Steve Healy , President of Zimmer Spine. “With the new Zimmer DTO 5.5 System, we are excited to offer clinicians the ability to seamlessly integrate Zimmer’s innovative Sequoia and Instinct Java Pedicle Screw Fusion Systems with theDynesys Dynamic Stabilization System through a simple, low-profile construct.”
By enabling a simple transition from fusion to non-fusion within a single implant, the Zimmer DTO 5.5 System provides stabilization at levels adjacent to fusion while preserving contiguous segment anatomy and restoring posterior disc height. The system and its new instrumentation feature streamlined reduction and compression capabilities that enable the treatment of a broad range of pathologies at contiguous levels, depending on patient need and clinician preference.
