These days we have talked about the acquisition of Nuvasive by Globus Medical in terms of market and increase in shares and leadership position. However, we have not yet discussed the increase in the product portfolio in a more specific way.
What is Nuvasive going to bring to Globus in terms of products?
It will mainly provide complementary TECHNOLOGY to the current Globus Medical one.
What technology does Nuvasive have?
Nuvasive has opted to create a platform that integrates numerous technological solutions for the operating room, as we will see later. However, it does not have a robot or a 3D fluoroscope since it uses the Siemens Healthineers Cios Spin.
What technology does Globus already have on the market?
1.-Excelsius GPS: Combining a rigid robotic arm and full navigation capabilities into one adaptable platform for accurate alignment in spine surgery.

2.-Excelsius3D: It is an imaging platform, that offers unmatched imaging adaptability, intelligence, and automation. Consolidating cone-beam CT, fluoroscopy, and digital radiography into a single unit eliminates the need for multiple imaging devices throughout one procedure.
What TECHNOLOGY incorporates Globus?
Globus incorporates:
1.- PULSE: 3D imaging and navigation. In a single expandable platform, Pulse integrates multiple enabling technologies to improve workflow, reduce variability, and increase the reproducibility of surgical outcomes. Pulse introduces a procedurally integrated navigation technology that features state-of-the-art camera, array and workflow technologies to improve line of sight, ease-of-use, and surgical efficiency in the OR.
2.- The NVM5 platform (Neuromonitoring): The NVM5 platform is a comprehensive set of intraoperative technologies specifically designed for spine surgery. It includes multimodality monitoring of the spinal cord and nerves and refinements to the spinal rod-bending technology Bendini®.
NVM5 modalities include:
- Stimulated electromyography (EMG)
- Free-run EMG
- Motor evoked potentials (MEP)
- Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP)
- Computer-assisted surgery applications
3.-iGA® Integrated Global Alignment®: (iGA) is a platform comprised of procedurally based technologies designed to enhance clinical and economic outcomes by increasing the predictability of achieving global alignment in all spinal procedures. Our Integrated Global Alignment technology offers surgical planning and intraoperative assessment tools to help surgeons correct or restore spinal alignment. Intraoperatively assess the surgical approach and its effects on spinal alignment through real-time insights. Surgeons can later follow up postoperatively to check the result of the procedure.
4.- Bendini®( Patient-specific rod bending): The Bendini spinal rod bending system expedites manual rod manipulation via computer-assisted bend instructions. It offers tools that can assist in complex degenerative deformity cases.
5.-Lessray Technology (Smart imaging with radiation reduction): The use of X-ray imaging in MIS has greatly enhanced visualization. X-ray imaging has been shown to harm health through repeated exposure. The Lessray* technology increases OR efficiency through streamlined imaging workflow, significantly reducing exposure to radiation for everyone in the room.
What does it contribute to Implants?
The Globus range is the most complete on the market. In most cases, the products overlap. But, among those that do not, we can highlight the following:
1.- MAGEC: The MAGEC system utilizes innovative magnetic technology within adjustable growing rods and an external remote controller (ERC) to help avoid distraction surgeries from the treatment for early-onset scoliosis (EOS). As a result, MAGEC helps reduce associated complication risks from repetitive surgeries and simplifies the care and journey of an EOS patient.
2.- PRECICE: Limb lengthening: The Precice system uses distraction osteogenesis. Interaction between magnets in the device and an ERC allow for precise, adjustable, and customizable distraction throughout the lengthening phase of treatment. Following the corticotomy and during the lengthening phase, the Precice implant is gradually lengthened based on the patient’s requirements with the hand-held ERC. When the desired length is achieved, intramedullary fixation provides stability throughout the consolidation phase.
Among the overlapping, which ones stand out from Nuvasive?
In our opinion, the XLIF Nuvasive (X360) procedure could be slightly better. Even though the Globus range of lateral implants is better and incorporates implants such as the expandable ELSA, in our opinion, the Max Access 4 retractor is superior to MARS3V (Globus).
