(UPDATED 2024): +32 Fenestrated Pedicle Screws to Know..!

June 30, 2024 By SPINEMarketGroup

The growing number of surgical procedures performed in the spine has highlighted the problem of screw loosening in patients with poor bone stock due to osteoporosis and/or tumors. While various methods have been reported to increase screw purchase, fenestrated screws for cement augmentation have proven to provide an effective and lasting solution in these cases. The use of cement-augmented fenestrated pedicle screws is an effective strategy for improving pedicle screw fixation in osteoporotic patients, though there is a potential risk of cement extravasation, which is typically asymptomatic.

Fenestrated screws have several important applications and advantages in orthopedic surgery. They are particularly beneficial for osteoporotic fractures, providing extra stability by allowing bone cement to interdigitate with the bone structure. In spinal surgeries, such as vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty, fenestrated screws facilitate the distribution of bone cement within the vertebrae, enhancing the procedure’s effectiveness. They are also valuable in fixing complex fractures that are difficult to stabilize with traditional screws.

The advantages of fenestrated screws include enhanced stability, as the addition of bone cement significantly improves the mechanical strength of the screw-bone interface. This cement augmentation reduces the risk of screw loosening, a common issue in osteoporotic bones, and allows for customizable fixation, enabling surgeons to adjust the amount of cement injected to optimize stability based on the specific clinical scenario.

Today we have gathered the most relevant fenestrated screws from different companies and continents:
