The MIS Pedicle Screw Market is Growing. Competition is Fierce. Learn about the 75 most Relevant Systems.

December 17, 2017 By SPINEMarketGroup

According to iData Research,  the U.S. minimally invasive spinal implants market was valued at $1.62 billion in 2016. This is expected to increase over the forecast period at a CAGR of 3.6% to reach $2.08 billion (iData Research).

Traditionally, pedicle screw systems have been implanted through open surgery from posterior approach. However, a growing number of these devices are being implanted using minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques. MIS is significantly less invasive than open surgical procedures, which can result in a lower intraoperative time and a more rapid recovery for the patient. The major driving force behind growth in the MIS pedicle screw market is the perceived physiological benefits of minimally invasive surgery to the patient. These include reduced trauma, shorter hospital stays, lower post-operative medication use and quicker return to work.

Minimally invasive pedicle screws are implanted using retractor or percutaneous access systems. The majority of growth in the MIS pedicle screw market is a result of increased use of non-cannulated screws in minimally invasive PLIF procedures, as well as growth in the percutaneous cannulated screw market. Cannulated screw procedures are expected to increase rapidly over the forecast period because they can be implanted in percutaneous procedures using guidewires, unlike non-cannulated screws. The MIS pedicle screw market is expected to increasingly cannibalize revenue from the traditional cervical and thoracolumbar fixation markets. The number of procedures will continue to experience a high rate of growth until as the market is highly driven by the MIS interbody fusion market.

Leading competitors in the U.S. include the most important companies as DePuy Synthes, Globus Medical, or Stryker. But the majority of competitors in the U.S. minimally invasive spine market are small companies with market shares of 2% or less. In 2015, our MIS section counted for less than 50 Companies with MIS pedicle screw systems  but today we have included more than 75 systems.
