Spinal Elements® to Feature the Karma®, An Aging Spine, Metal-Free Fixation Solution, at Upcoming 38th Annual Meeting of the North American Spine Society

October 13, 2023 By SPINEMarketGroup

CARLSBAD, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Spinal Elements®, a spine technology company, today announced that the Karma, a novel solution for treating degenerative spondylolisthesis with stenosis in the aging spine, will be featured at the upcoming 38th Annual Meeting of the North American Spine Society at the Los Angeles Convention Center on October 18th through October 21st, 2023.

A live surgical demonstration and presentation, “Novel Posterior Cortico-Pedicular Fixation in the Aging Spine” will be presented at the NASS Surgical Stadium in the Exhibit Hall on Thursday, October 19th at 2:30 pm by Pierce Nunley, MD and Terrence Crowder, MD, where attendees can learn about the benefits of this novel solution for treating degenerative spondylolisthesis with stenosis in the aging spine. Hands-on demonstrations will take place at Spinal Elements’ booth #1315 throughout the convention as well.

The Karma system consists of a high-performance polymer fixation device used to stabilize the lumbar spine as an adjunct to fusion procedures. It is designed to engage the strongest bony elements of the posterior lumbar spine. Given its polymer construction, the device is radiolucent with the exception of a blended contrast medium that allows Karma to be seen radiographically. Otherwise, the device does not interfere with postoperative imaging.

The Karma device may be surgically implanted through open or minimally invasive surgical techniques, and its extremely low device profile compared favorably to other larger metal posterior fixation devices. The system is part of Spinal Elements’ MIS Ultra™ suite of products that are intended to address the unintended consequences of spine surgery.

Ron Lloyd, CEO of Spinal Elements, stated, “Karma represents a major milestone in our journey to redefine spine surgery, and we are excited to share this latest technology at NASS. The new application of Karma in the Aging Spine represents a major milestone in our journey to continually bring innovative solutions and technologies to improve patient outcomes in spine surgery.”

“When a patient presents with a chief complaint of neurogenic claudication, a stable spondylolisthesis and a secondary complaint of mild to moderate low back pain, Karma provides an ideal, less invasive solution and in many cases can be performed outpatient,” said Terrence Crowder, MD, of Sonoran Spine.

The Karma fixation system has been organically developed by the Spinal Elements team guided by input from multiple spine surgeons. Clinical application of Karma has been ongoing.

Spinal Elements invites all attendees to visit its booth at NASS #1315 and witness the future of spinal technology.
