Richfield, Ohio, January 11, 2016 – Intrepid Orthopedics, a product development company, has signed its first licensing agreement with a major spinal implant company for its proprietary B-DriveTM Self-Retaining Screw Drive System. When fully licensed, B-Drive is expected to generate $5-$10 million during the lifetime of the patent.
Lee Strnad, President of Intrepid Orthopedics, is the inventor of the B-Drive and saw the need for it as the result of 20+ years of developing orthopedic implant systems. B-Drive’s design is unique because it separates the retaining and driving forces, which creates 100% retention between the screw and driver and increases the life of the driver.
B-Drive can be used for any application, both medical and non-medical like automotive, computer, and consumer electronics, where the screw must be retained by the driver for insertion or removal. For spine, Intrepid is limited to only four (4) more non-exclusive licenses. For other markets, Intrepid is considering limiting the number of licenses issued to increase its value to its licensees.
Chuck Birchall, Jr., Vice President, said, “In a competitive market, the early adopters of B-Drive will have a unique, sustainable advantage over its competition. Just like Torx® and Hexlobe® made older designs obsolete, B-Drive has the potential of doing the same thing.” Presently, several orthopedic companies are evaluating the B-Drive and will be on display at the upcoming American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons at Intrepid’s booth (#2818). For non-medical applications, Intrepid is looking for potential customers or manufacturers to license its B-Drive.
