The Freedom® Cervical Disc (FCD) is a one-piece, viscoelastic, total disc replacement device and is intended to relieve neck pain by replacing intervertebral discs that have been damaged by degenerative disc disease or DDD.The material characteristics of the polymer used in all Freedom® Discs, in combination with their design, provide both stability and three-dimensional motion that biomechanical testing has shown functions within the natural biomechanics of the spine. The Freedom® Lumbar and Cervical Discs are designed to withstand the forces and wear characterized by decades of use as an implant in relatively young patients.
Benefits:
- Responds to loading like the human spine
- Withstands the forces and wear of decades of use
- Moves in three dimensions like the human spine
- Polymer core has flexibility and stiffness that mimics a healthy human disc: The material characteristics of the polymer used in all Freedom® Discs, in combination with their design, provide both stability and three-dimensional motion that biomechanical testing has shown functions within the natural biomechanics of the spine. The Freedom® Lumbar and Cervical Discs are designed to withstand the forces and wear characterized by decades of use as an implant in relatively young patients.
About Artifical Cervical Disc
An artificial cervical disc is a device inserted between two vertebrae in the neck to replace a damaged disc. The intent of the artificial disc is to preserve motion at the disc space. It is an alternative to the commonly performed anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), a surgical procedure that is designed to address the pathology by eliminating motion at the diseased disc level.Artificial disc replacement (ADR) surgery—also known as a total disc arthroplasty or total disc replacement (TDR)—is typically performed for a patient with a cervical disc herniation that is causing significant neck pain and/or arm pain that has not responded to nonsurgical treatment options and is significantly affecting the individual’s quality of life and ability to function.Source:https://www.spine-health.com
About AxioMed
Axiomed was founded in 2001 by surgeons at Cleveland Clinic and engineers who previously worked with Dr. Art Steffee to develop the Acroflex viscoelastic disc replacement. The Acroflex disc was made with rubber vulcanized to titanium endplates which led to failures. The new Axiomed disc is made of a proprietary silica-based viscoelastic material proven in extensive biomechanical and biocompatible testing to mimic the human disc in all planes of motion and over 50 years of longevity years of testing. The viscoelastic material is radiolucent and thus X-ray and MRI compatible. Over 800 discs have been implanted worldwide with zero failures and zero revisions. It is the only viscoelastic lumbar disc to complete an USA IDE clinical study with up to 10 years of follow up.
