Astura Medical Unveils Advanced Sublaminar Bands System for Spinal Deformity Correction

June 3, 2024 By SPINEMarketGroup

Astura Medical is thrilled to announce the full release of its Olympic Deformity Sublaminar Bands System. This groundbreaking system provides surgeons with an advanced method to stabilize spinal deformities, utilizing the technological innovations of the Olympic Deformity System and incorporating fastening rods and connectors for enhanced surgical precision and control.

A Significant Advancement in Spinal Surgery

Astura Medical’s Olympic Deformity Sublaminar Bands System represents a significant leap forward in spinal deformity correction, offering surgeons a versatile, precise, and reliable toolset for improving patient outcomes. This innovative system is poised to enhance surgical capabilities and patient safety in complex spinal deformity procedures.

What are its advantages?

Enhanced Precision and Control

The Sublaminar Bands System offers surgeons the flexibility to choose between a complete band-only approach or a hybrid construct that integrates the Olympic Deformity System with hooks, pedicle screws, and multiple connectors across the lumbar and thoracic spine. This versatility facilitates deformity correction through various surgical techniques, providing alternative fixation methods for complex deformity surgeries.

Sublaminar Bands

Central to the system are the sublaminar bands, crafted from durable and biocompatible polyethylene terephthalate (PET). These bands are designed to prevent neurological complications during insertion or removal and come in two thickness options, 3mm and 5mm, to cater to different surgical needs. The bands feature malleable or suture ends, offering maximum intraoperative adaptability.

Comprehensive Band Connectors

Astura Medical’s Sublaminar Bands System includes a comprehensive set of connectors that offer unparalleled versatility for spinal deformity correction. These connectors accommodate rods ranging from 5.5mm to 6mm in diameter and are available with single- and double-set screw lock options. Surgeons can choose between parallel and perpendicular band attachment configurations, as well as side-load, closed, and top-load rod attachment setups.

Instrumentation Overview

The system’s instrumentation is designed for optimal performance and ease of use. The tools feature a protective matte finish to reduce glare when using a microscope or headlight during surgery. Key instruments include the T25 Set Screw Inserter, a fixed stick-fit screwdriver with a robust screw-to-screwdriver interface. These instruments are compatible with the Olympic Posterior Spinal Fixation System.

Streamlined Band Tensioner

A highlight of the Sublaminar Bands System is its streamlined band tensioner, designed for functionality within limited anatomic spaces. Multiple units are available for bilateral or multi-segment maneuvers, allowing for precise force application. The tensioner includes an integrated gauge feature that enables surgeons to measure the applied tension accurately (75-150 N of force). The design ensures unobstructed access to connector set screws, allowing for controlled locking and unlocking during procedures.

The band tensioner works in tandem with a Band Tensioner Driver, a hex driver designed for handle-operated precision tensioning, providing a secure screw-to-screwdriver interface. Additionally, an integrated Band Connector Inserter/Tensioner ensures rigid attachment to the connector throughout the insertion, tensioning, and locking sequences.
