Owing to the recent technological advances, the number of minimally invasive procedures has increased significantly, along with the traditional open surgery techniques.In the United Kingdom, spinal pain and lower back pain are recurrent problems that improve with natural history and can be managed in primary care. The number of people seeking healthcare for these problems is expected to rise.

The UK spinal surgery devices market is moderately competitive and consists of several major players. Moreover, with increasing technological advancements and product innovations, mid-size to smaller companies are increasing their market presence by introducing new technologies with better usability. Until, the British start-up firm Axis Spine appeared, there were no British company focused solely on spine apart from distributors (Lindare Medical, Macromed and others). The rest of the British Orthopaedics companies either not sell spinal implants (Corin Medical, JRi Orthopedics) or they include them as part of their global portfolio.

2.-Implants international limited

Implants international limited was launched in 1994 and since then has evolved into a modern pro-active and multi-disciplined bio-engineering company, dedicated to excellence in the Arthroplasty, Trauma and Spinal implant sectors.It is located in Thornaby-On-Tees, Cleveland, United Kingdom.

Vadin Implants is a newly established firm, aiming to offer implants and instruments for trauma and joint replacement surgery. The main goal of the company is to develop products based on successful proven designs and offer them at a reasonable cost. The manufacturing of the implants takes place exclusively in Sheffield, England, a location considered as the capital of orthopaedic implant manufacturing. The quality control is meticulously designed so that all the implants and instruments are continuously monitored during their manufacturing phase in order to meet the highest quality standards. Vadin has been certified with ISO 13485:2003 by one of the most respected notified bodies in the world, the British Standards Institution (BSI).

Their spine range of products include:

  • Cervical: An anterior Cervical Plate.
  • Lumbar: The RIGIDFIX System

4.- Axis Spine

Axis Spine, is a UK-based spinal implant company, raised £830k in funding. Led by Jonathan Arcos, CEO, Axis Spine has been developing the next generation of spinal implants for three years. It expects to secure clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) next month.The start-up is helping to develop the next generation of anterior spinal implant technology.
